Introduction
Originally known as Sunraysia Centre (SC), little athletics commenced in Mildura in the summer
season of 1968/69, not long after little athletics was founded in Geelong in 1964. The prime movers
in the formation of SC were Mr John Clark, Mr Fred Fields, Mr Smith, Mr J Cheer, Mr P Janssen, Mrs
W Bell, Mr G Thompson, Mr N Lawn, Mr F Lewis, Mr R Coucher, Mr R Skinner, Mr K Carson and Mr
Bert Penny. The first venue was a temporary track on No. 3 Oval, at the San Mateo end of Mildura
Recreation Reserve, which was the home of South Mildura Football Club. The age range of athletes
in Victoria then was Under 6 to Under 13. SC commenced as an official centre in 1970 when it
affiliated with the Victorian Little Athletics Association as Centre number 24. Later mainstays in the
early days were Mr Charles and Ms Margaret Cook who were to become the first life members. The
program was on a four-week cycle over 12 weeks running between early October and the end of
March. Of note by 1984 the range of ages went from Under 6 to Under 12. By 1984 the program had
changed to a three-week cycle. At some stage before 1986, the name Sunraysia Little Athletics (SLA)
was adopted. In 2022 a four-week cycle was adopted for earlier finish time with high membership.
